Research at the Collaborative Center for Literacy Development

Our mission is to conduct research in literacy that informs policy and practice early childhood through adult. In the current academic year, CCLD receives approximately $1.8 million in state and federal funds to support its research projects. Faculty at CCLD and its partner universities work collaboratively to improve literacy through rigorous research and evaluation. The center's research projects vary in terms of scope and methodology and include both large- and small-scale studies.

Susan Cantrell, Ed.D., is the Director of Research for the Collaborative Center for Literacy Development (CCLD).  She conducts research related to reading comprehension processes, programs and practices for improving reading comprehension, and teacher efficacy and development. In addition to overseeing the CCLD's research activities, she serves as an assistant professor in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Kentucky and teachers courses in literacy. Currently, she is the Principal Investigator on two U.S. Department of Education Striving Readers evaluations.

Janis Carter

Janis Carter, Ph.D. is the Statistical Research Manager for CCLD. She conducts research that applies quantitative methods to evaluate the performance of large scale, multi-site initiatives, and she is particularly interested in the complexity of measuring the reading achievement of struggling readers. She has taught classes in statistics, econometrics and operations research. Currently, she is a Co-Principal Investigator on two U.S. Department of Education Striving Readers evaluations.

Margaret Rintamaa, Ed.D. is the Research Projects Manager for CCLD. She manages large-scale studies involving multiple schools, universities, and agencies. She teaches courses in classroom management and discipline for undergraduate and graduate students in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Kentucky. Currently, she is the Project Manager for two U.S. Department of Education Striving Readers evaluations.
